Thorsten Kiefer

JPI Oceans

Executive Director

Thorsten is the Executive Director of the Joint Programming Initiative Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans (JPI Oceans). JPI Oceans is a pan-European intergovernmental platform that strengthens marine and maritime research and innovation by means of transnational cooperation, including joint research funding, infrastructure sharing, and science-policy interaction. Before joining JPI Oceans in March 2019, Thorsten was the director of the Future Earth Global Hub in Paris. Future Earth is a global network of researchers and innovators in support of the urgent profound transitions towards sustainability in environmental and societal sectors. Among other things Thorsten established Knowledge-Action Networks among Future Earth and partner programmes on the topics of sustainable oceans and of risks and extremes. Thorsten had joined Future Earth after a decade as Executive Director of the Past Global Changes (PAGES) programme, where he facilitated global research and synthesis into past environmental changes that pre-date systematic measurements and observations by using archives such as fossil corals, tree rings, sediments or ice cores. Thorsten’s roots are in research in the field of paleoceanography. At the Universities of Kiel, Germany and Cambridge, UK, he analysed deep-sea sediments to study the substantial oceanographic and climatic changes that took place over the past thousands to ten-thousands of years.
